Featured Electronica Artist: Hobo. Debut full lenght album out today.
25yr old Canadian techno producer Joel Boychuk, better know as HOBO releases his highly anticipated first full lenght album ‘Iron Triangle’ today on Richie Hawtin’s label, MINUS.
There is a disticnt wang of ‘I grew up an hour down the road from Detroit’ kind of a vibe off the album and this more than likely lends itself to the fact that at the tender age of 18, Boychuk was hanging out in Detroit’s infamous Shelter Club. Every major act who that has ever gotten started in Detroit has played here. The exact same can be said for Hobo as the Shelter Club is where he was snapped up by Richie Hawtin for a MINUS/Tractile release along with fellow producer Adam Young.
Having exhausted all avenues with Tractile, Boychuck decided to go solo after 13 months of consecutive touring of Europe with Adam Young, and pretty soon after his split from Tractile Hobo was born.
Having had the privilege of listening to Iron Triangle one month in advance of it’s release thanks to Tailored Communications, I’ve really had time to soak it up, get to know it, and really fucking like it! Iron Triangle opens with quite a dark, Detroit inspired, machines having sex with each other techno kind of a vibe (to quote an avid techno fan). The title track to the album along with Get F are two pretty bad ass choons, and bounce around in a playful techno kind of a way. My personal favourite to the album, Sundown, the closing track is just straight up Techno and really really well produced.
For those of you producers out there who care and want to know how to sound like Hobo I’ll leave the explanation up to him, so here’s something I ripped from his Facebook page that outlines what he uses and how:
“I use a few external synths and a microphone and sample the hell out of them. Also a few of external boundary FX. Mostly though, I use Live’s built in FX and definitely their Sampler. For the love of sound, don’t buy sample libraries or you’ll make music that sounds like everyone else who buys them. Be original! Make your own sounds, sample yourself over and over again, buy a synthesizer and learn how to use it! No one should be making techno who doesn’t understand how to use a synthesizer in and out.
And when you take a break from all that, listen to some Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin. ;)”
